Accident at Turin's GAM, some works in storage damaged

An incident that occurred at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAM) in Turin damaged some works in the gallery. The incident involved the fire-fighting system, according to the statement released by GAM on Friday evening: “During a semi-annual inspection of the fire-fighting system, a technical failure occurred that damaged some works, with repairable damage. Therefore, the works will be restored and the fault will be repaired.” The damage reportedly affected some 19th-century works stored in the museum’s storage rooms. At the time of the damage (there was allegedly an explosion, probably caused by a fire gas cylinder, which resulted in the failure of some pipes, which collapsed on the works) there were no workers or technicians present in the museum’s storerooms.

According to the little that has leaked out and what GAM director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev told La Stampa, the works, which were already in need of restoration, will go immediately to the laboratory for compensation for the damage done.
