Monday, July 30, 2018 will see the handover of the “Pompeii Accessible” project, an experimental project aimed at studying solutions to improve the use, restoration and enhancement of the archaeological site of Pompeii, with particular reference to the Suburban Baths. The handover will take place as part of theFramework Agreement signed in February 2017 between theUniversity of Naples Federico II, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and the Deloitte Foundation, the latter of which is funding the project.
Speakers will include:
- Rector Gaetano Manfredi, University of Naples Federico II;
- Director General Massimo Osanna, Pompeii Archaeological Park;
- President Paolo Gibello, Deloitte Foundation;
- prof. arch. Renata Picone, Full Professor of the Department of Architecture and Director of the School of Specialization in Architectural and Landscape Heritage at the University of Naples Federico II, coordinator of the Project.
The experimental research project, financed by the Deloitte Foundation, aims to implement the accessibility to the archaeological area of Pompeii, in line with the accessibility policy already initiated by the Archaeological Park with the Pompeii for All route (facilitated visit itinerary for people with motor difficulties) in order to allow anyone, without exclusions and without barriers, to be able to enjoy the common archaeological heritage.
The project "Pompeii Accessible. Guidelines for an expanded use of the archaeological site has involved since 2011 a research group, composed of about thirty professors and young scholars from the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II, which has analyzed solutions for the accessibility, restoration and enhancement of the Suburban Baths of Pompeii.
As part of the Framework Agreement between the University of Naples Federico II, the Archaeological Superintendence of Pompeii (now the Archaeological Park of Pompeii), signed in February 2015, the Deloitte Foundation offered its contribution to finance a phase of experimental research that is coming to an end and a phase, later, of implementation of the restoration and enhancement interventions of the Suburban Baths.
The first phase of the implementation of the research project was carried out by a group of professors and young scholars from the Department of Architecture, who produced the outcomes that are presented on Monday. The path, within a broader overall design, was divided into strategic areas, within which some significant buildings, such as the Suburban Baths, were enhanced.
The second phase of the project’s implementation involves the implementation in the next two years, by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, of the pilot intervention to overcome architectural barriers in the Suburban Baths, according to the methodological lines of the research project.
Accessible Pompeii project will be delivered on July 30. |
