Italia Nostra is launching an appeal calling for the protection of the Costa dei Trabocchi, the splendid southern stretch of the Abruzzo coastline that runs from Francavilla al Mare to the border with Molise. An area of great scenic and environmental value, so much so that it has merited the establishment of the Costa Teatina National Park, which only needs the signature of the President of the Republic to defend effectively.
“The displacement of the Adriatic railway line, which used to run there close to the shore,” writes Ebe Giacometti, president of Italia Nostra, “makes it possible to give back to Italy and the world uncontaminated landscapes of incomparable beauty and the enjoyment of an area rich in monuments, such as Santa Maria in Venere, overlooking the sea, D’Annunzio sites, historic centers full of artistic testimonies. Among the assets to be protected are also the ancient fishing machines: the Travocchi, also called Trabocchi. On the decommissioned railway site, the Abruzzo section of the Adriatic Cycle Route, known as the ’Green Way of the Trabocchi Coast,’ is being built, which will allow alternative mobility and enjoyment compatible with the places.”
“This set of opportunities,” Giacometti continues, “risks being thwarted by some unwise interventions. Already we have had to record an ugly Regional Law on the Trabocchi, which compromises the testimonial function of these artifacts, sanctioning their abuses, allowing them to be enlarged, and effectively transforming them into mere restaurants. Now we see inappropriate choices in the realization of the ciclovia such as impermeable pavements, prefabricated toilets on the seashore, poor care of the natural context and outrage to the landscape values. Finally, we learn of a ’regulation’ of permissible activities, in which parking lots appear close to the lidos and the concession of grocery and trinket selling activities along the route. This is taking place outside of any overall planning, in defiance of Regional Law No. 5 of 2007, which provides for a coordination program to bring the System of Protected Areas of the Teatina Coast (of which the railroad bed areas also form part) into full operation, and while locally short-sighted opposition to the establishment of the National Park of the Teatina Coast is fomented.”
Italia Nostra’s territorial sections have already promoted complaints and are already actively participating in the committees that are being formed. The National Executive Council of Italia Nostra will therefore raise the issue with local governments, the Abruzzo Region, the government and the President of the Republic, noting severe threats to the historical-cultural heritage and landscape of the Theatine Coast, and will undertake a campaign for the National Park to finally be established. Together with exponents of culture and academia, Italia Nostra is therefore launching an appeal to the media and public opinion calling for a major mobilization with the goal of returning the Costa Verde dei Trabocchi to the country.
