Terre des Hommes, an organization committed to protecting girls and young women against abuse, has launched a petition to ask Milan Mayor Beppe Sala to dedicate a statue to all girls and young women victims of violence.
To date, more than 2,800 signatures have been reached, and many people from the worlds of culture, entertainment, and politics have already supported this cause.
The statue would be not only a tribute but also a warning to draw attention to a highly topical issue every day. “A fierce and distracted society also needs symbols to regenerate itself, to attempt to do so. A statue is a concrete action and an invitation to care. A space and a child’s gaze that forces us to pause and asks for change,” stressed actress and theater director Sonia Bergamasco. “A statue for all those little girls who failed to become women,” added writer Chiara Gamberale, “because whether or not one survives abuse, violence, when it comes, mows down the flower of the person who would have blossomed. A statue for all those flowers. To allow them, however, to open. Forcing us not to forget.” Of the same opinion is Piero Colaprico, journalist and writer: “A monument for yesterday’s victims can also serve the victims of today and tomorrow as an encouragement to let them know, denounce, rebel.” Carla Signoris, actress and writer, says, “Our distracted lives need symbols to help us reflect and work so that this horror is no more!”
The initiative aims to send a strong message addressed to the entire country.
The signatures collected will be delivered to the Mayor of Milan and the Milan City Council. The first goal is to receive the concession of an area designated for the statue’s placement, but then the project will move forward with the increasing involvement of public opinion. “We want the monument to be born as the fruit of an open process,” says Paolo Ferrara, director general of Terre des Hommes. "If we get the green light from the municipality, it is our intention to open a call for ideas to imagine the work and a public crowdfunding campaign to realize it. For it to be the beginning of a renewed collective commitment, the statue will have to be the fruit of a common, heartfelt, participatory and shared effort."
