Object of desire at the May 15, 2019auction to be held at Christie’ s will be a royal tiara made by Fabergé for Princess Alexandra of Hanover in 1904. The precious object was created on the occasion of the princess’s marriage to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick Francis IV.
The grand duke’s mother, Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia, a great collector of Fabergé objects, wished to ask her son to have his wedding gift made by the famous jeweler himself.
According to documents, Fabergé stated that he would not be able to deliver the jewel in time for the wedding because he had not been given precise instructions on the final design of the tiara.
Princess Alexandra of Hanover could not wear the Fabergé tiara for her wedding, but was obliged to wear the traditional Hanover wedding crown, a jewel commissioned in 1761 by King George III of England for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She did not receive it until later, which is why the tiara was not shown to the public for more than a century.
The jewel features a frieze of floral designs intertwined with ribbons and embodies eternal love, while arrows refer to Cupid, symbolizing commitment and affection. In addition, nine aquamarine stones carved in the shape of a pear are placed on the tiara.
Christie’s will auction the precious Fabergé tiara in Geneva and it is expected to fetch between 200 and 300 thousand euros.
