Back on display in Bologna ’s Collezioni Comunali d’Arte is the painting St. Francis Receives the Stigmata by Filippo da Verona, restored thanks to Coop Alleanza 3.0’s Opera tua initiative.
The work, which dates from 1515-1520, will be visible to the public again from Wednesday, June 24: chosen by Coop Alleanza 3.0 members, its restoration began in late October 2019.
The intervention included the removal of the work from its usual setting at the Collezioni Comunali d’Arte in Palazzo d’Accursio, the photographic survey, including infrared light, to locate the most degraded areas of the panel, and numerous diagnostic investigations, which provided fundamental information for the proper conduct of the restoration. The wooden support was consolidated; the crossbeams affixed to the back had to be removed, which were reassembled once the restoration operations were completed. Cleaning of the pictorial surface was then carried out, removing repainting that was not coeval with the work. Finally, grouting was carried out at the cracks between the panels and the pictorial retouches to allow a correct view of the image.
Saint Francis Receives the Stigmata by Filippo da Verona is an oil on panel dated 1515-1520. Very little documentary information is available about the Veronese painter, most of which can be inferred from the signatures on his works or from contracts signed for the execution of works. he moved frequently for the works he was commissioned to do, working in many cities in northern and Adriatic Italy. The artist is best known for creating works with religious subjects, intended for places of worship or private devotion.
Therestored work can be admired in Room 6 of the Palazzo d’Accursio’s Municipal Art Collections exhibition itinerary.
