A new contemporary art museum will open in Pescara this year: Imago Museum

Imago Museum, a new contemporary art museum that will house two important core collections as well as contemporary art exhibitions, is about to open in Pescara.

It was supposed to open in 2020, but the opening slipped to 2021 due to the Covid-19 health emergency: however, the doors of Imago Museum, Pescara’s new contemporary art museum, will open soon. The museum center is among the most important projects carried out in recent years by Fondazione PescaraAbruzzo (a banking foundation that is the heir of Fondazione Caripe, or the foundation of Cassa di Risparmio di Pescare and Loreto Aprutino), and it will be headquartered in the former Banco di Napoli building on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II in Pescara, purchased in 2013 for the sum of 5 million euros (to which 2 million euros were added for the creation of the museum), and for which the external techno-lighting system, conceived as a complement to the building’s rationalist architecture, has already been built and inaugurated.

The new museum stems from the donation of 130 works of 20th-century art from the collection of Alfredo Paglione and the important nucleus of works by Mario Schifano (Homs, 1934 - Rome, 1998) from the PescaraAbruzzo Foundation. Paglione’s works, centered on the theme of “historical reality” (materialism, existential realism, neo-romanticism and other movements pertaining to this current) will be exhibited on the second floor of Imago Museum, while the second floor will house Schifano’s large collection of works. All of this will be on about 1,200 square meters of exhibition space, where there will also be space for temporary exhibitions, as part of which national and international contemporary artists will be involved.

Just to Schifano and Pop Art will be dedicated the first exhibition, entitled Andy Warhol and Mario Schifano between Pop Art and Classicism, for which unpublished works will also arrive in Pescara. It will be the first opportunity to walk through the halls of Imago Museum, whose spaces, explains Fondazione PescaraAbruzzo, “have been realized, right from the design definition, paying the utmost attention to the interaction between light, space and works of art, as fundamental elements that express the character of the new exhibition center.” And for the Foundation, it will be an opportunity to return to an understanding of the social power of art: the payoff for the opening is, in fact, “Art that will bring us together again.” A website, www.imagomuseum.it, is up and running, and it is already possible to interact with the museum through its Facebook page.
