On the occasion of the exhibition on Gaudenzio Ferrari that will soon open in three venues (Novara, Vercelli and Varallo Sesia), the major restoration campaign involving many of the works by Gaudenzio Ferrari (Valduggia, c. 1475-1480 - Milan, 1546) and other artists destined to be displayed in the exhibition was presented today. The work was supervised by the Centro Conservazione e Restauro La Venaria Reale (CCR), which was responsible for the conservation and securing of some of the works on display in the Novara and Vercelli venues (the Novara Castle and the Arca Arte space, respectively). The restorers first joined officials from the Superintendencies of Piedmont and Lombardy to carry out inspections to check the state of conservation of the works: many of the paintings from churches in the area in fact required very serious evaluations before being transported.
And several paintings were in fact deemed amenable to intervention. They were therefore taken to the Center’s laboratories and subjected to restoration work: the works are Bernardino Lanino’sLast Supper on wood panel from the Basilica of San Nazaro Maggiore (called in Brolo) in Milan, Aimo Volpi’s Madonna del Latte preserved in the parish church of San Giacomo in Rimasco (Varallo), and a Madonna and Child with St. Julius from the Basilica of San Giulio on the island of the same name on Lake Orta. In addition to these panels, five cartoons by Gaudenzio Ferrari owned by the Accademia Albertina in Turin were analyzed: these delicate works were carefully studied and subjected to conservation review in order to ensure their safe display.
The CCR also carried out interventions on works that will not be displayed in the exhibition, but which are part of the visiting routes outside the museum premises. Thus, the Evangelists from the church of San Cristoforo in Vercelli, attributed to Gaudenzio Ferrari, and the Madonna of the Oranges, an altarpiece by Gaudenzio Ferrari commissioned in 1529 and kept at the same house of worship, underwent extraordinary maintenance. Finally, JRC technicians will support the organization of the exhibition throughout the set-up phase, with assistance, documentation and monitoring activities, and will ensure the proper display for the duration of the exhibition.
