The Madonna of the Pomegranate painted by Botticelli and workshop, a work that is smaller in size than the famous canvas by the same artist kept at the Uffizi Gallery, will be auctioned on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. at Drouot Auction House in Paris.
From the 19th century, the painting was part of two prestigious collections: first that of Frederick Richards Leyland and later the collection of Edouard Aynard.
The work is now presented by the maison Audap & Mirabaud.
The protagonists of the splendid painting are the Madonna, in a central position, holding the Child in her arms against a background in which a landscape and part of an architecture can be glimpsed.
Both are clutching a pomegranate in their left hand, a symbol of Christ’s Passion.
The Madonna wears a soft green cloak on her shoulders, and her head is encircled by a white and pink veil that gently descends.
Other replicas of this work exist: only three are known, and one of them is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
