In Venice, St. Mark’s Square will be lit up with an artistic Christmas tree: it will be created by artist Fabrizio Plessi and will be digital. A large installation consisting of more than eighty modules of moving gold-colored LED lights: it will be a giant golden mosaic, designed as a"tribute to light and a message of rebirth." It will be placed between the two columns of the Piazzetta from December 4, 2020 to January 6, 2021.
“The idea for this installation stemmed from my great love for Venice,” said the artist. “I imagined a giant golden mosaic, reminiscent of the gold of the Basilica, in which each piece lives a life of its own. For the first time in my work I made the luminous flow of each element go in different directions, going to create an interweaving of contaminations as a metaphor, on the one hand, for the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and, on the other, to enhance the historical memory of this city, a place of encounter and exchange between different cultures par excellence. The use of digital in this context becomes spiritual emotion that expresses itself in the only language possible today, allowing us to reach out to others despite the physical distance. An evocative sculpture that stands to show how, once again, it will be the light of art to show the way to overcome these dark times together.”
The project is promoted by the City of Venice in collaboration with Generali and is part of Natale di Luce 2020, which also includes in the Marciana area a lighting intervention at the Procuratie Vecchie and Nuove and along Calle XXII Marzo up to Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, as well as the extension until January 6 of the installation L’Età dell’Oro on the façade of the Napoleonic Wing of the Correr Museum created by the same artist.
