Modena’s Ghirlandina, a symbol of the city and part of the historic-architectural complex recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the Duomo and Piazza Grande, is preparing for a major upgrade. The city council has approved a project worth a total of 230,000 euros, already authorized by the Superintendency, which will focus on updating the electrical systems and installing a new interior lighting system.
The work, which will begin in December and will be managed by the Municipality’s Public Works sector, will be organized to minimize the impact on the monument’s usability. External scaffolding will be installed on the west side of the Tower, but without impeding pedestrian passage and guaranteeing opening to visitors in the afternoon and on weekends. The interventions will affect, among others, the internal staircase, the Hall of the Stolen Secchia, which has housed since 1325 a copy of the famous war “booty” made famous by Alessandro Tassoni ’s 1630 heroicomic poem, and the Hall of the Torresani, the belvedere on the fifth floor of the Tower, 43 meters above the ground.
The aim of the work is to enhance the decorated cross vaults of the Sala della Secchia and all other areas of artistic significance, using energy-efficient Led equipment, which will also allow the creation of programmable lighting scenarios. The old plastic electrical fixtures will be replaced with copper mineral cable lines to reduce visual impact, and the connecting stairs will be equipped with dual-emission lighting to highlight both the steps and the vaults.
Exterior scaffolding, needed to transport materials, will be limited to an area of less than twenty square meters west of the Tower and will remain in place for only four weeks. The interior work will be carried out in the morning on weekdays, between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., thus allowing visits in the afternoon hours (2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.), weekends and holidays (9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.), which can be booked through Visitmodena.it.
Theredevelopment is synergistically part of the broader program of “Enhancement and promotion of the UNESCO heritage and Media Arts for the enhancement of the city’s tourist attractiveness,” funded by the Ministry of Tourism under theunder the Fund in favor of municipalities with a cultural, historical, artistic and landscape vocation, in whose territories are located sites recognized by Unesco as World Heritage Sites, and is part of the two-year program of tourism promotion of the Unesco site of Modena and Modena as a Unesco Creative City for Media Arts.
