Sending 10.000 postcards to Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to protest against his hard line against migrants, one of his slogans being the phrase “they will see Italy only in postcards”: this is the goal of the Only in Postcards - Summer 2018 campaign, created by a group of young Italian creatives (Michela Locati, Nicole Romanelli, Pietro Gregorini, Verdiana Festa, Sara Consolato, and Federica Michelietti), as a response to deaths at sea, battles against humanitarian ships, and port closures.
“We want to launch an epistolary uprising denouncing deaths at sea,” Nicole Romanelli explains, “a stance by Italian creatives in support of those who save lives off our coasts every day.” So, a campaign to tell what happens off the Italian coast, and to stand by those who save lives at sea, taking a clear position: “rescuing those who risk dying at sea is a priority and a duty regardless of the different political positions on reception. Obstructing rescue operations is a violation of human rights that cannot be ignored.” The campaign also aims to mobilize creative people by spurring them to take a stand, as well as inform and raise awareness about the role of NGOs and the work NGOs do in the Mediterranean.
Anyone can join the campaign: you can send your postcard to www.soloincartolina.it. All that is required is that the postcard (in the standard format of 15 x 10.5 centimeters) reminds one of a classic holiday resort postcard, the kind we have all sent to someone at least once in our lives: so space is made for vintage, trashy, 90s, minimal, kisses and hugs postcards, as long as they are in line with the campaign theme. The entries will then be printed in the standard format and sent to the Viminal.
Below is a selection of some of the postcards already visible on the campaign website.
