Photo preview of the major exhibition on Ambrogio Lorenzetti at Santa Maria della Scala in Siena. October 22, 2017 through January 21, 2018.
Scheduled for Sunday, October 22, is the opening of the major exhibition that Siena is dedicating to Ambrogio Lorenzetti: almost all of the artist’s movable works have been brought together in Santa Maria della Scala for an exhibition that constitutes a new milestone in studies on the great Sienese painter, best known for the Good and Bad Government frescoes in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, but the author of a production of the highest level, which can be seen up close almost in its entirety in the Siena review, which closes next January 21.
A project launched in 2015, of great cultural and civic value, curated by three experts on Sienese art such as Alessandro Bagnoli, Roberto Bartalini and Max Seidel, who also edited the catalog (published by Silvana Editoriale), which also stands as an up-to-date monograph on Ambrogio Lorenzetti: it is the first on the Sienese painter in almost sixty years (the last was written by George Rowley in 1958). “Ambrogio Lorenzetti,” declares Daniele Pitteri, director of the Santa Maria della Scala complex, “was one of the greatest painters of the 14th century, an extraordinary innovator of the stylistic and iconographic languages of his time, as well as an artist of high and refined intellectual qualities. At a time when progressively, and fortunately, we are abandoning the logic of large blockbuster exhibitions to embrace that of rediscovery and monographic reflection on the great artists of the past, an exhibition dedicated to Lorenzetti takes on a value that goes beyond the impact of the winds.”
The exhibition is open daily except Tuesdays. Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Last admission half an hour before closing time.
