Cellist Camille Thomas has returned to play on the rooftops of Paris: she had already done so in March, when the French capital was facing its first lockdown for the Covid-19 pandemic. And now that the second confinement, as the French call it, is underway and museums and monuments are empty, the young musician climbed onto the roof of theInstitut de France and began playing Ravel’s Kaddish on her 1730 Stradivarius.
With her gesture she wanted to “feed the soul” and “bring beauty” to the residents. “I deeply believe that beauty will save the world, it is essential food, food for the soul. It is more than just entertainment, like watching a series on Netflix. The nourishment of the soul that comes from visiting a museum or listening to a musician play-this is what allows us to endure in the most difficult times,” she said.
Since June, Camille has started a project that has taken her to play in empty museums and now has nine videos planned that will be shot in different French locations, including Versailles, the Palais Garnier, the Musée Rodin, and the Musée d’Orsay.
