With Zuchtriegel, Pompeii managed according to unscientific criteria? The letter from the 112

A group of 112 archaeologists, architects and art historians have signed a document questioning the future of Pompeii under the direction of Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

We receive and publish a document signed by 112 archaeologists, architects and art historians regarding the appointment of Gabriel Zuchtriegel as director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, after publishing yesterday’s editorial with the position of our editor Federico Giannini. Below is the text and the list of signatories.

"The resignation of Irene Bragantini and Stefano De Caro from the Scientific Committee of the Pompeii Archaeological Park brings to attention a fundamental problem, incident to the management of Italy’s cultural heritage. Two of the foremost experts on ancient Pompeii do not agree to share the ministerial choice of the new Park Director: as such, they do not seem to recognize scientific competence that would justify the appointment, regardless of age. Bragantini and De Caro seem to foresee that the Park, given the premise, will in the future be managed not according to scientific, and therefore cultural, criteria, but only with criteria aimed at increasing economic profit, visitor numbers, and easy consensus. It would be up to the Scientific Committee alone to ensure a semblance of scientific coverage. Yet, it is a noble Italian tradition that the administration of Cultural Heritage has, until a few years ago, been accompanied by enlightened and strict scientific research. How can one administer if one does not know what one is administering? Not a few have been those in charge of superintendencies who have also become university professors and members of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. In the climate of renewed seriousness that is reportedly characterizing the Draghi government, it would be most appropriate to return the management of Italy’s Cultural Heritage to traditional competence, abandoning its unheard-of corporate and monetary management.

In particular, it would be essential that the appointment of the directors of autonomous museums and archaeological parks be by regular competition and not by fiduciary appointment by the minister on the basis of the proposal of questionable ’terns’ of names."
