Visiting the museum completely naked: this is the initiative that the Musée Maillol in Paris has imagined for the exhibition Hyperréalisme. Ceci n’est pas un corps, an exhibition dedicated to hyperrealist sculpture with works by George Segal, Ron Mueck, Maurizio Cattelan, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Duane Hanson, Carole A. Feuerman, John DeAndrea and several others. In collaboration with the Fédération Française de Naturisme, the French naturism federation, the museum has organized a visit that is intended to take place, the presentation says, “in respect of naturist values.”
It is, the museum explains, a way to... compare one’s own body with the works on display. “What bodies are real? The exhibition is, as the title suggests, focused on the representation of a crowd of motionless creatures, disturbing replicas of humankind,” Musée Maillol explains. “In our modern Western societies, since the late 1960s, the language of the physical has progressively been freed from its shackles, has led and accompanied struggles for emancipation bringing about great changes. To be able to bare oneself, in a literal sense, in front of others is first of all to challenge oneself, to overcome the fears and doubts one may have about oneself. In a naturist context we do not ’show’, we do not show off, we simply ’are’. A return to the origins, detached from appearances, which allows us to fully experience the visit, in a respectful, demure and original way.”
The nudist visits are open to all: two have already been held on November 10 and 11, while the last “round” is scheduled for November 17, at 7:30 p.m., 8:15 p.m. and 9 p.m. Visiting the museum without clothes has the same cost as the “textile” visit, as the nudists say: 16 euros the full price, 14 euros the reduced price for children aged 19 to 25.
“A rich evening,” commented the Fédération Française de Naturisme on its blog. “Exchanges with journalists, some changed views on our art of living. Many young women were surprised to feel so comfortable naked, among strangers who were also naked. Some told us it was difficult to get dressed. The parallel with the works works. Congratulations to the naturist volunteers of ANP Paris for welcoming visitors, their helpfulness and the work they did.”
This is not the first time a museum has hosted a nudist visit. It has long been the practice in France, although not as frequent, and in January 2020 for the first time a visit without clothes was also organized in Italy, at the PAC in Milan, on the occasion of the exhibition Australia, stories from the antipodes. While this is a first for the Musée Maillol, the naked visit is not unprecedented for the exhibition on hyperrealism, which has already made stops in Liège and Lyon before arriving in Paris, again organizing such evenings, and also with some success. Organizers planned to welcome as many as 800 nudists on the three Paris stops. The exhibition will continue until March 5, 2023.
