Turin will host the 57? Annual Conference of the World Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2025

The announcement during the General Assembly in Los Angeles: the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, along with other institutions, will lead the organization of the event that brings the international network of modern and contemporary art museums back to Italy after nearly 50 years.

The city of Turin will be at the center of the international modern and contemporary art scene in 2025: the Piedmontese capital will in fact host the next Annual Conference of CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art). The announcement was made yesterday, Dec. 8, during CIMAM’s General Assembly in Los Angeles, by Suhanya Raffel, president of CIMAM and director of M+ in Hong Kong, and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, president of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. The event, now in its 57th year, will be organized by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, with support from Fondazione Torino Musei, Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT.

This is a return to Italy for CIMAM, which had been missing from our country for almost fifty years: the only previous Italian edition took place in 1976 between Bologna and Prato.

CIMAM, founded in 1962 and affiliated with ICOM (International Council of Museums), is the only global network dedicated to directors and curators of modern and contemporary art museums. Based in The Hague, the organization promotes the sharing of knowledge and best practices in the field, supporting professional development through ethical guidelines and international cooperation tools.

The Annual Conference represents the central moment of CIMAM’s activities. During the event, which will take place in the Piedmontese capital in 2025, key issues for the future of museums will be discussed, from economic sustainability to collection diversification, including challenges related to digitization and enhancing the cultural and social impact of museum institutions.

“In Turin,” says Suhanya Raffel, “we would like to propose a dynamic, open and participatory exercise, consisting of reflecting together on the difficulties of dealing with disruptive changes as new paradigms develop in our field. A case study-based conference geared toward providing us with a collectively crafted toolkit to counter the many challenges that too often make us feel overwhelmed and disempowered in our daily work as arts professionals. Epictetus - a Greek Stoic philosopher - wrote: ’Some things are in our power, others are not. In our power are opinion, motivation, desire, aversion and, in a word, everything that is our own doing.’ And that is precisely what we would like to analyze together in Turin: our actions and the relevance of a practice-based culture to ensure a thoughtful and intelligent future for life.”

Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo says, “We are delighted to host CIMAM’s Annual Conference in Turin, where we will develop a collective reflection between the Scientific Committee and external speakers on how art and culture can still shape our future. Through centuries of history, Turin has embodied the importance of culture for human society. Turin is a laboratory city where theoretical approach is transformed into practice. Together with the transnational arts community that CIMAM represents, we would like to think about structural transformations in our sector, new beginnings we can think about, and new alliances, including with the business sector, to ensure a central position of art and culture in our society.”

A Scientific Committee has already been formed that includes leading figures from the international museum and academic world. Chus Martinez, director of the Art Gender Nature Institute in Basel, will chair it. It will be joined by Kamini Sawhney, Independent Curator; Malgorzata Ludwisiak, Artistic Director of the Warsaw Museum of Modern Art; Leevi Haapala, Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Helsinki; and Victoria Noorthoorn, Director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires; and by the Directors and Curators of the host institutions Francesco Manacorda, Director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea; Chiara Bertola, Director of GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino; Bernardo Follini, Senior Curator of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo; and Davide Quadrio, Director of MAO Museo d’Arte Orientale.
