The Ancient Greenhouses of the historic Miramare Park, a masterpiece of Viennese engineering designed by Carl Juncker, have been restored in Trieste . Thanks to theconservative restoration work, the Miramare Greenhouses, built between 1857 and 1860 (by Anton Hauser’s construction company, while the structure was built by the Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino), have been restored to their original function with a project that aimed to combine respect for the historical heritage and adaptation to contemporary needs.
The restoration work made it possible to preserve the exterior appearance and material texture of the building, while adapting it to today’s needs. Electrical and water connections were made and an elevating platform was installed to facilitate the handling of potted plants, which will be housed in the Old Greenhouses starting next fall. Special attention has been paid to the indoor microclimate, which has been improved with a low-temperature radiant floor heating system, capable of mitigating the harsh winter conditions, and ultraviolet lamps to compensate for the shading of the surrounding tall trees.
Now the Old Greenhouses, as in the nineteenth century, will once again become functional to the life of the Park, occasionally hosting temporary botanical collections. With their restoration, Maximilian of Habsburg’s great dream of creating a citrus grove that would evoke the Mediterranean Garden took shape, a project that at the time of the Park’s construction could not be realized due to the harsher climate. After the success of the first production of “Amare,” the Miramare orange marmalade, there are plans to expand the production, which will be available at the Castelletto bookshop.
The Ancient Greenhouses of Miramare Park are located near the Castelletto and Piazzale Massimiliano. Originally intended for botanical experiments, they were used by court gardeners, including Joseph Laube and Anton Jelinek, to plant plants and essences. The New Greenhouses, close to the Grignano gateway, have also been recently restored and now house some ancient varieties of bitter citrus (they also make an orange marmalade soon to be sold at the Castelletto bookshop). This project marks the beginning of the realization of an Orangerie in Miramare, a wish of Maximilian.
The inauguration of the restoration of the Ancient Greenhouses is thus an opportunity to rediscover an important piece of Miramare Park’s history and to appreciate the marriage of tradition and innovation.
