The Uffizi speaks Spanish. Virtual tour #Uffiziencastellano kicks off.

The Uffizi Galleries launches #Uffiziencastellano virtual tour to tell the story of works in the collections created by Spanish artists.

The Uffizi Galleries are speaking Spanish, launching on the social Facebook channel, which the museum venue recently opened, the virtual tour #uffiziencastellano. Starting Sunday, April 19, works from the collections by Spanish artists such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, El Greco, Diego Velázquez, and Francisco Goya will be narrated in Spanish by the Florentine museum’s staff. The Spanish-language tours will be subtitled in Italian.

Alejandra Micheli, assistant director of the Uffizi Galleries, dedicated the first Spanish-language tour to the Madonna and Child by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a painting made around 1650 that is on display in the Mars Room of the Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace. Other #uffiziencastellano virtual tours will also be dedicated to masterpieces on view at the Uffizi by artists such as Alonso Berruguete, Francisco de Zurbarán and Jusepe de Ribeira.

The director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt, said, “In this month of closure we have continued to think about our visitors and tried to reach out to all art lovers. This is precisely why we are multiplying initiatives on our social channels and on our website. We also enhance art through the language that identifies a culture and a people. We decided to start with a tribute to Spain, the European country that at this time perhaps more than any other shares the Covid-19 tragedy with Italy.”
