The Uffizi Galleries have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Cultural Services of the city of Hong Kong: the agreement provides for the organization in China of an exhibition, from September 2020 to January 2021, entitled Sandro Botticelli and Florentine Painting of the 1400s, for which the Uffizi will send to Hong Kong some of their masterpieces, by Botticelli as well as other artists. In return, Hong Kong will provide lavish financial support to the Florentine museum: an initial contribution of 600,000 euros is planned for 2020. The partnership between the Uffizi and Hong Kong will last five years, during which time there will be cultural exchanges, visits, and study opportunities between Florence and China. A sort of twinning, in short.
The list of works that will leave for Hong Kong has not yet been released. What we know for sure at the moment is that the trip will not involve the most famous masterpieces such as the Venus, the Primavera, theAnnunciation, the Madonna of the Magnificat and the Madonna of the Pomegranate, and that the Botticelli paintings to leave the Uffizi will be less than ten and will be small and medium-sized works: according to early rumors, among the possibles could be Pallas and the Centaur (already loaned for an exhibition in Germany in 2011), Portrait of a Man with Medal by Cosimo the Elder,Adoration of the Magi, Calumny, and Saint Augustine in the Study. There will also be a few dozen works by other artists.
“We are excited to announce this collaboration with the Hong Kong museum system,” says Uffizi Director Eike D. Schmidt. “After our recent ventures in Russia and Poland, the Uffizi is carrying out another major international operation. This strategic project will be instrumental in increasing awareness of Italian culture around the world and ensuring that Italy is at the forefront of cultural exchanges in the 21st century.”
