Museum incursion for the Tour de France: yesterday, the final stage of the Grand Boucle, which took the cyclists from Mantes-la-Jolie to Paris along a 122-kilometer route, also passed through the Louvre. The riders of the cycling stage race passed through the cour Carré, the museum’s large square courtyard, parading alongside the Pyramid, and then ending their final parade, as per tradition, under the Arc de Triomphe. For the record, the stage was won by Irish sprinter Sam Bennett ahead of Dane Mads Pedersen and Slovak Peter Sagan, while the race saw the triumph of two Slovenians: Tadej Pogačar paraded on the Champs-Elysées in the yellow jersey, followed by compatriot Primož Roglič. Third place for Australian Richie Porte.
The Louvre released pictures of the cyclists’ passage on its Facebook account, and posted a spectacular video on YouTube. The passage had been meditated for some time, since the route had been unveiled last October, but certainly the Louvre hopes to benefit from these images, since visits to the museum, during the pandemic, have drastically reduced: in fact, this year, the museum marked -75% in July and -60% in August. And at this sensitive time in history, so many occasions become good opportunities to turn the spotlight on museums.
Below is the video of the passage of the runners.
