The entire cycle of Giotto ’s frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua was acquired by Haltadefinizione with gigapixel technology under a concession from the City of Padua. A painted surface of more than 700 square meters that required a large photographic campaign for a total of 14 thousand shots and a year of work to process the images.
Now through a 360° multimedia viewer it is possible to navigate through the details of the splendid frescoes: thanks to sophisticated filming techniques the image can be magnified dozens of times without ever losing definition (available from this link).
In the Scrovegni Chapel, under a starry sky of gold and azurite, the fresco cycle depicting the Stories of the Life of the Virgin, the Stories of the Life of Jesus and the Last Judgment unfolds along the walls in a rich iconographic program. The Scrovegni Chapel is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest masterpieces of Western art
Visitors can virtually enter the Chapel and select the fresco to be discovered in ultra-high definition and explore all the details of a unique masterpiece. One of the great potentialities of gigapixel images is the possibility of making even the “tallest” works of art visible up close, as in the case of this magnificent cycle, which in the upper register reaches almost 13 meters in height.
"The Scrovegni Chapel constitutes a new important milestone for Haltadefinizione and is part of the broader project of valorization and accessibility of Italian cultural heritage that we started in 2007 with Leonardo’sLast Supper," says Luca Ponzio, founder of the tech company. “In 2019 we signed an agreement with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities for the valorization and promotion of state collections that brought important collaborations with the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome, for the valorization and monitoring of the collections. We are now very proud to add Giotto’s masterpiece to our database, which consists of more than 600 images.”
