The Reggia di Caserta wins the City’Scape Award 2024 for its planned management and conservation plan for the Royal Park and its two lead projects: the redevelopment of the Waterway through the renewal of the first row of holm oaks and the sustainable management of the Royal Park’s grasslands. The jury reviewed more than 240 projects from around the world, and the Royal Palace of Caserta won in the section dedicated to interventions on historic parks and gardens, ex aequo with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
The Ministry of Culture Museum participated in this international initiative that celebrates best practices in various areas oflandscape architecture, promoting excellence in design globally. In recent years, the Royal Palace of Caserta has focused its attention on protecting its natural heritage, a fragile legacy to be protected in relation to its identity characteristics, security issues, climate change, sustainability and responsibility to future generations. This has led to the adoption of a rigorous and interdisciplinary working method to plan an effective management program.
Of particular note is the Waterway redevelopment project, which involved the complete renewal of the first row of holm oaks in the Royal Park. This intervention was developed on the basis of extensive studies conducted for over two years by authoritative institutions such as the DISTAL department of the University of Bologna and the DIA department of the Federico II University of Naples. In addition, the project saw the initiation of a participatory process aimed at spreading awareness in the management of plant heritage.
The City’Scape Award 2024, organized by Paysage - Promotion and Development for Landscape Architecture - and the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators (CNAPPC), recognizes the work done by the Royal Palace of Caserta and in particular by the Preservation and Enhancement Service of the Royal Park.
“This recognition gratifies the daily work of all those who in recent years have strongly believed in the projects of redevelopment, recovery and rebirth of the Royal Park of the Royal Palace of Caserta,” says director Tiziana Maffei. “A confirmation for us that we have operated with a clear mind, always open to welcome new knowledge, new opportunities and new perspectives. A refutation to superficial approaches to such complex issues, devoid of scientific foundation. I hope, therefore, that this award, given by a jury of experts, will reassure even those who so far have not wanted to believe in the extremely hard work we are carrying out with extreme responsibility to ensure the rebirth that the Royal Palace of Caserta deserves.”
