The Polyptych of the Mystical Lamb, a masterpiece created in 1432 by Jan and Hubert van Eyck and kept in Ghent, will find a new and definitive location as of March 25, 2021: it will be placed in the Sacrament Chapel of the Cathedral of St. Bavon-St Baafs in Ghent. The Chapel of the Sacrament, in the ambulatory, turned out to be the most suitable place to definitively house the great work: spacious enough to accommodate the glass case and allow for views of both the exterior and interior panels, and adjacent to the Vijd Chapel, the original home of the Polyptych. The tranquility of this space also encourages an intimate encounter with the painting. The polyptych will be moved here from the Villa Chapel, where it is currently located.
Thanks to a major, state-of-the-art restoration project, the monumental altarpiece with its twelve recto verso painted panels and the iconic Adoration of the Mystic Lamb in the center will be able to be admired by the public in its original location, the Cathedral of St. Bavon, but in a new space and context that enhances the perfection achieved by the Van Eycks five hundred years ago. Visitors will be able to access it from the cathedral’s crypt, which has undergone a major expansion and renovation, and then relive the polyptych’s troubled history in a tour, through state-of-the-art technology using augmented reality.
In fact, from March 25, the long-awaited Visitor Centre, an experiential center dedicated to the Gothic cathedral and the artistic treasures it holds, will open.
