The reorganization of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage decided by Minister Dario Franceschini and presented yesterday at the Collegio Romano brings a significant novelty, namely the birth of the National Museum of Matera, which will result from the union of the Archaeological Museum “Domenico Ridola” and the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Palazzo Lanfranchi: the headquarters of the new museum will be precisely Palazzo Lanfranchi. The union of the two museums “crowns intense years of tireless work by the Regional Museum Pole of Basilicata to enhance the cultural heritage alongside city and regional institutions,” says Dr. Marta Ragozzino, director of the museum pole and the region’s latest historical and artistic superintendent.
The work done by the pole and superintendency has led to the refurbishment of the two museums, the organization of several exhibitions at Palazzo Lanfranchi (including Renaissance Seen from the South, the main exhibition of 2019, the year Matera was European Capital of Culture), the improvement of cultural accessibility and the consequent opening of the museums to the community. For these reasons, Minister Franceschini decided to grant the museum scientific, organizational and economic autonomy.
“The establishment of the National Museum of Matera,” Franceschini said, “is a way to continue the extraordinary year of Matera Capital of European Culture. As has happened with other entities that have seen their autonomy strengthened, I am sure that for the National Museum of Matera, too, a virtuous path will be triggered that will contribute to the growth and development of the territory. Autonomy works, in recent years it has certainly brought more visitors, but above all it has been an excellent tool to modernize Italian museums and strengthen protection and scientific production. The data speak for themselves: the intersection of reform and the quality of directors has proven to be a winning mix for the Italian museum system.”
