On March 6, on the occasion of the Day of the Righteous of Humanity, the Garden of the Righteous will be born at the National Archaeological Museum in Taranto. In fact, MArTA will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Taranto Quality of Life Committee tomorrow: director Eva Degl’Innocenti and the committee’s president, Carmine Carlucci, will kick off a scientific-cultural, but also civic and pedagogical, link between two realities that have felt the’need to keep alive and renew the memory of those who, in every time and place, have done good by saving lives, stood up for human rights during genocides and defended the dignity of the person by refusing to bow to totalitarianism and discrimination between human beings.
Intent is to make the March 6 date a permanent fixture in the city’s cultural and social programming.
The first tree will be an olive tree, a symbol of peace and dialogue among peoples: it will be planted in the lawn of the former Alcantarine Convent and will be named after Khaled al-Asaad, the Syrian archaeologist killed by ISIS in 2015 in Palmyra.
“Returning to the Righteous means preserving and defending memory and history, and recognizing the merit of extraordinary people, such as Khaled al-Asaad, one of the Middle East’s foremost scholars of archaeology, who in 2015 was tortured and beheaded by jihadists from theIsis in Palmyra, a UNESCO heritage site, right among the remains of the ancient amphitheater of the historic Syrian city that he had tried to defend,” said MArTA director Eva Degl’Innocenti.
“We would rather die than surrender,” Khaled Al-Asaad often said, evoking the prophetic words of Queen Zenobia, ruler of Palmyra, and with the Garden of the Righteous the MArTA and the Quality of Life Committee of Taranto renew the memory of this righteous man, martyred in the name of culture.
