From March 8, 2023, on the occasion of International Women’s Day and in the month that marks the birth of Palma Bucarelli (Rome, March 16, 1910 - July 25, 1998), the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum in Rome will present a new itinerary dedicated to the figure of the noted art historian and critic.
The Beauty of Intelligence. New Acquisitions and Restorations, this is the title of the exhibition, presents the most recent museum acquisitions consisting of four unique pieces of artist’s jewelry that belonged to Palma Bucarelli and were acquired by her niece Barbara Lazzarini for the collections of the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum. These are a pendant, a necklace, a ring and a pair of earring glasses bearing the signatures of great artists of the 20th century such as Lorenzo Guerrini, Umberto Mastroianni and Gastone Novelli.
A number of dresses from Palma Bucarelli’s wardrobe donated to the Museum in 1996 and 2010 underwent a thorough and careful restoration that enabled the cleaning and consolidation of the fabrics and decorative elements. Thus in a new guise are day, afternoon, cocktail and evening models dating from the 1940s to the 1970s that bear the signatures of well-known Roman and Neapolitan tailors who have now disappeared.
The gowns and jewelry worn by Palma Bucarelli on different occasions delineate her identity as a charismatic and avant-garde woman and testify to the close link between art, fashion and innovation experienced always at the forefront of media interest.
