By the end of 2019, theAcademy Museum of Motion Pictures, the much-coveted film museum wanted by theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the institution that presents the Academy Awards, will open in Wilshire,Los Angeles. The museum will be set up inside the May Company Building, renovated for the occasion with a glass dome that will house a 1,000-seat theater and a balcony.
At the opening, the long-term exhibition Where Dreams Are Made: A Journey Inside the Movies will open, spanning two floors and displaying props from cult films such as The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain and Casablanca, and even the typewriter with which the screenplay for Psycho was written. The same exhibition will also praise iconic celebrities such as Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart, Sidney Poitier, Greta Garbo, and Marilyn Monroe. The layout of this exhibition will conclude with a reconstruction of the Stargate Corridor from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Also at the opening of the museum will be three temporary exhibitions: Transcending Boundaries, an interactive installation created by teamLab; Regeneration, focusing on the work of African-American independent filmmakers; and Hayao Miyazaki, all dedicated to the Japanese animation genius.
