The Turin Gam launches the #photoimperfectGAM photo contest. Participate by taking a reasonably wrong photo.

GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino launches a photo contest dedicated to the exhibition Helmut Newton. Works, set up in the museum’s halls but closed to the public due to a health emergency.

Inspiring the contest is an unusual and unprecedented aspect of the great photographer’s production: the imperfect photo.

The photographer himself had said, “I often try to take ’bad pictures.’ Of course I can’t help but work meticulously, but I like the photographs to look wrong.... I prefer shot colors, which make one think of a mistake in development.... I happen to hold the camera a little sideways, just enough so that the photo doesn’t look too perfect.”

Imperfection helps make the photograph more believable and puts the shot in a dimension of reality.

To participate in the #photoimperfectGAM contest, one must therefore post a “wrong photo” on the Instagram platform accompanied by the appropriate hashtag.
However, the GAM specifies that “imperfect photo” does not mean “bad photo”: the error must always be functional to the story, aimed at giving more strength and character: a crooked horizon can give dynamism to a scene, just as a creative blur can make it more dramatic. The intended error can give the image a soul, making it come alive: however, behind every “mistake” there must still be a reasoned choice and a motivation, always keeping in mind that even a plausible explanation alone is not enough to give more value to one’s shot.

The photos will immediately be posted on GAM’s Instagram stories. And, as soon as possible, they will be printed to create a dedicated wall within the spaces of the Education Department.
