On July 21, 2021, after six years of closure, the Gibellina Museum of Contemporary Art will finally reopen to the public: in fact, the rearrangement of the institution that houses about two thousand works by artists, sculptors and photographers who, in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the Belice region between January 14 and 15, 1968, participated in the rebirth of this area of Sicily under the sign of art, thanks to the involvement and driving role of Mayor Ludovico Corrao, elected in 1969 and after whom the museum is named.
This museum, established in 1980, aims to be a large anthology of Italian and foreign artists from the 20th century to the present day: there can be found works by Fausto Pirandello, Beniamino Joppolo, Antonio Corpora, Carla Accardi, Piero Dorazio, Pietro Consagra, Achille Perilli, Tano Festa, Toti Scialoja, Franco Angeli, Giulio Turcato, Mimmo Rotella, Mimmo Paladino, Enzo Cucchi, Turi Simeti, Mimmo Jodice, Renata Boero, Christo, Pino Pinelli, Emilio Isgrò, Luca Patella, Nino Mustica, Claudio Verna and many other artists. And now the MAC re-presents itself to the public with a new layout that offers the public about 400 works (that is, twice as many as were on display before the closure), which is still just one-fifth of the two thousand that the museum has.
The new itinerary is divided into eight sections in chronological order, from the early twentieth century to the present day, with thematic insights (for example, on the photographers who arrived in Belice in the first hours after the earthquake, and on the “Prisenti,” the ceremonial drapes that were embroidered by the women of Gibellina based on designs by Carla Accardi).
The inauguration of the MAC is set for Wednesday, July 21, at 6 p.m:30, in the presence of the president of the Sicilian Region, Nello Musumeci; the president of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, Gianfranco Miccichè; the director general for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, Onofrio Cutaia; of the bishop of Mazara del Vallo, Domenico Mogavero; of the regional councillors for Tourism, Manlio Messina, and for Cultural Heritage, Alberto Samonà; of the mayor of Gibellina Salvatore Sutera; and of the councillor for Culture Tanino Bonifacio. Actor Alessandro Preziosi will read fragments from The Night of Gibellina by Massimo Recalcati. Also planned is a tribute to Franco Battiato by his longtime keyboardist and friend Angelo Privitera, who will perform some of the singer-songwriter’s songs on the piano, who died in Milo in mid-May. Then, from July 22, the MAC will definitely open its doors to the public. On the two weekends after the opening (July 24 and 25-July 31 and August 1), free admission for Gibellina residents.
