Two paintings on canvases depicting the Madonna Annunciata and the Announcing Angel by Sebastiano Conca (Gaeta, 1680 - Naples, 1764) are back on public view in the room dedicated to the Urbino 18th century at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche. Having been in storage for years, the works underwent a major restoration carried out by Veronica Soro of the Pesaro-based Cinabro firm, thanks to the sponsorship of the Ancona-Pesaro and Urbino Confartigianato, and are now on display after the intervention.
Returned perfectly legible, the two works originally flanked Federico Barocci ’s well-known painting of St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata in Urbino’s Capuchin Church. The type and subject matter suggest that these canvases were probably doors to a small organ, the pipes of which were often covered by paintings that opened during celebrations. Sebastiano Conca’s typical style can be traced in the grace and elegance of the forms.
With today’s relocation of the two canvases, theinstallation of the rooms on the second floor of the Ducal Palace of Urbino, dedicated to works of the 18th century, which began last April with the inauguration of the first six rooms, followed in mid-July by the opening of the second tranche of renovated and refurbished spaces, is finally complete.
