The San Gimignano Municipal Museums reopen to the public tomorrow, June 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. It will therefore be possible to visit again, every day except Wednesday and Thursday, the Palazzo Pubblico, the Pinacoteca and the Torre Grossa.
The Palazzo del Popolo or Palazzo del Podestà will be accessible (at the reduced price of 7 euros per person) to admire the stupendous Sala del Consiglio, where Dante Alighieri was received in 1299 as ambassador of the Guelph League, frescoed by Azzo di Masetto. Here is the famous Maestà, painted in 1317 by Lippo Memmi, a follower of Simone Martini.
On the second floor, in the Camera del Podestà, depictions of love scenes and examples of morality are visible. The frescoes, painted in the early 14th century, are attributed to Memmo di Filippuccio, Lippo’s father. On the other hand, the Pinacoteca, also on the second floor, offers a high quality art-historical itinerary, characterized by the presence of Sienese and Florentine painters who from the late 13th century and throughout the 15th century took turns in the city, producing works of inestimable value. These include Filippino Lippi with a pair of roundels with the Annunciation, Benozzo Gozzoli, Benedetto da Maiano, and Pinturicchio. The tour is completed by a climb to the Torre Grossa, the highest tower in San Gimignano, from which it is possible to enjoy the view of the Tuscan countryside and the city.
The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Spezieria di Santa Fina, the Archaeological Museum and the church of San Lorenzo in Ponte will remain closed to the public for the time being.
The reopening of the Civic Museums of San Gimignano guarantees all the safety regulations required by the health emergency, and the freeapp The Right Distance has been introduced: a smartphone application that, without any personal information related to privacy, will allow people to maintain the right interpersonal distance.
