SALT Autostrada and Museums Liguria continue to enhance the archaeological site of Luni

Did you know that the archaeological area of ancient Luni can be visited without leaving the highway? After the opening of the pedestrian path starting from the parking lots along the A12, the Liguria Museums Directorate and Società Autostrada Ligure Toscana are now preparing new signal

The collaboration between SALT - Società Autostrada Ligure Toscana and the Liguria Regional Museums Directorate for the enhancement of the archaeological site of ancient Luni and the National Museum continues: after the opening, in 2019, of the Portus Lunae route, which allows you to visit the site without leaving the A12 highway (you leave your car in the Luni rest area and a pedestrian path leads to the excavations: the fulcrum is the large bridge for pedestrians and bicycles that crosses over the Autostrada Azzurra and allows you to visit the archaeological area and the Marinella estate, a splendid maritime park that is a regular destination for locals), now comes the renewal of signage and an emotional video.

In fact, the project continues with the complete renewal of road signs for the “Antica Luni” rest areas along the stretch of the A12 between Sarzana and Carrara and the installation of new billboards in the five service areas on the stretch of highway between eastern Liguria and Tuscany (Brugnato ovest, Melara, Magra ovest, Monte Quiesa, Versilia est). Also, an emotional video in the food venues of the above-mentioned service areas, Touring signs on both carriageways, and new signs on highway exit signs in Carrara. These are the interventions carried out by SALT, which is the freeway concessionaire of the Ligure Toscano and Autocisa Sections, in close collaboration and with the indispensable historiographical support of the Regional Museums Directorate of Liguria, to promote the pedestrian connection between theA12 highway and the Luni archaeological area, where it is possible to visit the Luni National Archaeological Museum and the remains of the ancient Roman colony of “Portus Lunae,” the city also mentioned by Dante in the 16th canto of Paradise.

In addition, both the southbound and northbound rest stops also include a passage through the Luni Experience multimedia tunnel where, through a scenic sequence of projections and sounds, one can retrace the history of the ancient Roman colony from whose port ships loaded with the precious Apuan marble, in ancient times known as Lunae marble and today famous as Carrara marble, used in the construction of the most important monuments of ancient Rome and Roman times, were sailed.

“Not many people know that driving along the A12 between Sarzana and Carrara you pass by an archaeological site of extraordinary importance, the ancient city of Luna,” said Alessandra Guerrini, regional director Museums Liguria. “SALT’s intervention gives us an innovative example of how a collaboration between a road infrastructure and the world of culture can develop. Inviting travelers to stop and get to know the area, moving on foot from the highway, is a novel way to enrich the route, transforming the very meaning of travel. This is an experience we are happy about, made possible thanks to the synergy between the private and public sectors, which makes it possible to enhance and make cultural heritage increasingly accessible to all.”

SALT, for its part, says it is “proud to contribute, with a unique project in Italy, to the promotion of an archaeological site as important for the La Spezia area and the Italian cultural heritage as that of Luni.”
