Royal Palace of Caserta: trees uprooted by bad weather will become works of craftsmanship and sustainable energy

Last December, many trees in the Royal Palace of Caserta fell down due to bad weather. Thanks to a project they will be transformed into crafts and sustainable energy.

Last December, numerous trees in the Royal Park and English Garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta fell due to weather conditions, but these will come back to life thanks to an experimental project that will transform them into works of craftsmanship and sustainable energy.

The project allows materials to be reused with a view to fostering the development of an ethical and environmentally friendly territorial supply chain, in line with the goals “Health and well-being,” “Clean and Affordable Energy,” “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” “Responsible Consumption and Production,” “Climate Action,” and “Life on Earth” of Agenda 2030. The residues will not be considered waste and will therefore not result in a disposal expense for the Royal Palace, but will be transformed into artistic objects and clean energy.

A part of the woody material will be destined for energy recovery from biomass, and this energy will be made available to the Royal Palace of Caserta through a microgenerator: the highly technological plant will make it possible to obtain electrical and thermal energy at the same time through the gasification of organic waste.
On the other hand, part of the wood will be used for compost production: through the creation of a start-up, the compost will be packaged in bags and offered for sale. The compost will also be used for potting seedlings for visitors to the Vanvitellian Complex.

Crafts and gadgets will be made for the recovery and enhancement of the wood from the historic trees, and these will be sold inside the Royal Palace of Caserta and displayed in shop windows in the historic center of Naples.

“This is a small but important milestone. The loss last December of these trees represents a wound for the Vanvitellian Complex. The now chronic condition of vulnerability of the tree heritage has been the subject of great attention. They have, for example, been planned to monitor and programmatically verify the vegetative state of all plants. These broken lives, however, have become, thanks to this experimental project, part of a virtuous circle that makes sustainability and ecology its cornerstone. Part of a management path marked by care and a sense of responsibility,” said Reggia Director Tiziana Maffei.
