From January 6, 2022, the Roman House in the basement of the Giovanni Barracco Museum of Ancient Sculpture in Rome will reopen after more than two decades of closure. The domus dates back in its main structures to the fourth century AD; its discovery is accidental and occurred in 1899 during the partial demolition works of the Renaissance building that has housed the Museum since 1948, carried out on the occasion of the opening of the new Corso Vittorio Emanuele street axis. It has not been accessible to the public since 2000 and will now be extraordinarily open every day, except Mondays, until January 9, and until the end of February only on weekends, Friday through Sunday. The temporary reopening of the Domus, linked to the trial, is only the first step in a larger and more complex project to enhance the site.

In addition, from January 6, antiquity meets sustainable innovation thanks to the new Li-Fi project, a visit mode with wireless technology that allows visitors to delve into a selection of works from the museum’s permanent collection. The Barracco Museum is thus among the first museums in the world to equip itself with the Li-Fi system, which stands for Light Fidelity. This is one of the most modern and innovative communication mechanisms that allows information and images to be transmitted wirelessly, through light modulation, from special LED spotlights to visitors’ mobile devices equipped with cameras. To access in-depth multimedia content, simply download the appropriate App and place your smartphone or tablet under the light of the Li-Fi spotlight. The technology can be experienced at the Museum until February 20, 2022, with the possibility of extension, and involves fourteen points of interest, including nine in the ground and second floor rooms and five in the Roman House.
