A single ticket for the Roman Forum and the Imperial Forums has been introduced in Rome: the new access ticket thus makes it possible to unify the two sites by actually creating a single, large archaeological park in the heart of the capital. Until now, this had not been possible because the Roman Forum and Imperial Forums depend on two different institutions, namely the Capitoline Superintendence the former and the Colosseum Archaeological Park the latter: however, thanks to an agreement between the Superintendence and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, it has been possible to integrate the two. The agreement thus inaugurates a new season in the enjoyment of Roman cultural heritage because, for the first time, citizens and tourists will be able to visit the two sites together. The protocol signed by the two entities will, for the time being, start the project in an experimental phase until December 31, 2019, and if all goes well it should be fully operational from 2020, with the opening to the public of the Roman Forum-Palatine area together with the Imperial Forums.
The new single ticket will cost 16 euros and will be valid for the entire day. The route will last about two hours, the passage between the two sites will take place in the area between Curia Iulia, Forum of Nerva and Forum Caesar, while the ticket can be purchased at both the ticket offices of the Roman Forum and Palatine as well as those of Trajan’s Column. For 18- to 25-year-olds, tickets cost 2 euros and are part of the package of concessions introduced by Cultural Heritage Minister Alberto Bonisoli.
“By unifying the Forums,” said the minister, “we have managed to create an unprecedented itinerary that inaugurates a new way of enjoying and perceiving our historical, artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage while improving its offer. We have succeeded thanks to the work undertaken in recent months with each of the institutions involved.”
Virginia Raggi, Mayor of Rome, added, “Today a piece of history is being written: the Forums are finally united. We give citizens and tourists from all over the world the chance to live a unique experience by visiting at the same time the Palatine, the Roman Forum, the Forum of Caesar and the Forum of Trajan. In the Eternal City one can live a cultural experience that encompasses 3 thousand years of history. What the Rome Capital Administration in consultation with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage has managed to accomplish is a great success. Keeping archaeological areas and cultural sites separate for different institutional competencies does not work either for administering spaces or for the enjoyment of citizens and tourists.”
“As of June 29,” concluded Deputy Mayor in charge of Cultural Growth Luca Bergamo, “Romans and tourists will finally be able to visit the Forums in their entirety because common sense and institutional collaboration have finally made it possible to work for the general interest, overcoming an ancient division that saw on one side the area administered by Roma Capitale and on the other side the area administered by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. It is a beautiful step forward that makes available to everyone a new perspective on the archaeological area among the most important in the world.”
