Rijksmuseum awards 7,500 euros to people who create their own "masterpiece" inspired by museum works

Kick off the 2020 edition of the Rijksstudio Award: send your masterpieces to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The 2020 edition of the Rijkstudio Award, the prize that the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam gives out to creatives, both professional and amateur, has started. The mechanism is simple: just create a “masterpiece” inspired by a work in the Dutch museum’s collection, send it in, and hope to win. The contest officially kicked off on Nov. 1, and there is time to submit your work until Feb. 27, 2020. Winners will be announced on April 16, 2020. There are two categories: the Rijksstudio Design Award, open to everyone, and the Rijkstudio Young Talent Award, reserved for those under 21. The winner of the Rijksstudio Design Award will be awarded 7,500 euros, while 5,000 euros will go to the winner of the Rijkstudio Young Talent Award. An additional prize of 2,500 euros will be won by the work with the most public votes.

But basically, what kind of works can be submitted? Just take a look at the designs from past editions: T-shirts, shoes, chandeliers, toys, cutlery, jewelry, clothes. In the 2017 edition, even condoms, bed masks, contact lenses made it to the finals. In short, there are no limits to imagination. The contest is open to the whole world (in 2017 contestants from 62 different countries, including Italy, participated) and to learn more you can log on to the museum’s official website.
