The Prado Museum is launching a new project, The Prado by Night, supported by Samsung: on the first Saturday of each month, several of the museum’s galleries will remain open to visitors from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., aiming to bring all types of audiences closer and closer together and offering innovative reasons to visit. In addition to extending the museum’s opening hours by an additional three hours per month through August, this new program will offer a unique and unprecedented experience. Participants will be able to take advantage of digital applications specially created for the museum by Samsung, the Prado’s Technology Collaborator since 2013. During these nightly openings, musical events will also be organized and Café Prado will remain open.
For the first night opening scheduled for Saturday, March 4, the main attraction will be the Central Gallery of the Villanueva Palace, which houses masterpieces by Titian, Rubens, Goya, and Velázquez. Among the highlights of this space are two interesting juxtapositions: Titian’sAdam and Eve and Rubens’ version of the work, and two depictions of Venus and Adonis, one painted by Paolo Veronese in 1580 and the other by Annibale Carracci executed just ten years later in the artist’s more “Venetian” phase. Finally, striking visitors are the various views from the Gallery’s central section, including a view of three of the most important portraits in the history of Western painting-Charles V at the Battle of Mühlberg by Titian, Las Meninas by Velázquez, and The Family of Charles IV by Goya.
