The archaeological site will open in two phases: it will start at the end of May with a two-week experimental phase involving walking along the streets of the ancient city according to a predefined route and safety measures, guaranteeing both visitors and workers and security staff. Initially, thepreferred entrance will be in Amphitheater Square, as it is close to the center of the modern city, to give a signal of openness to citizens and to make the archaeological area an urban park usable by the Pompeian community. Only later will the accesses and related visiting itineraries be diversified.

“We are working in full synergy with the territory and the various actors involved, so that visitors can as soon as possible, again access the site,” said Park Director Massimo Osanna. “The first phase of opening on which we are reasoning, will allow us to assess the response of the community, which was the first to feel the consequences of the closure of the site, in view then of the next phase. For this second moment, we are defining safe visiting routes, but which can also transform the visit into a moment of in-depth study, with an innovative offer. In fact, access will also be provided to unpublished rooms and domus. In addition to local institutions and trade unions, we have listened to the tourism trade associations in order to incorporate their requests and meet their needs. Now it is important to restart in order to get the organizational machine moving again and, above all, to launch a positive sign of recovery, which will affect not only directly the archaeological site but the entire city and national tourism sector,” he concluded.
