Pompeii, the Insula of the Casti Amanti opens for visits, with a never-before-seen view of the restoration site

Pompeii Archaeological Park will open the Insula of the Casti Amanti to visitors from May 28, 2024. An elevated pathway on suspended walkways will allow the public to observe the entire Insula from above, and to witness ongoing investigation and restoration activities.

From May 28, 2024, the Pompeii Archaeological Park will open theInsula of the Casti Amanti to visits: an elevated pathway on suspended walkways will allow the public to observe from above the entire Insula, which includes the house of the Casti Amanti, the house of the Painters at Work and the house of the Cenacolo Colonnato. Thus, there will be an opportunity to witness the ongoing investigation and restoration activities and to admire the rooms that have emerged during recent excavation activities. These include a room decorated with mythological figures and gods and an image of a child wearing a traveler’s hood and cloak; charcoal drawings made by children in a service courtyard; and a hallway where two skeletons of victims of the eruption were found. The facades and some of the rooms of the insula were excavated in 1912; further excavations followed since the 1980s, bringing to light important parts of the internal structures of the block, which was open to visitors, for the part investigated at the time, at alternate times. The current project is aimed at the creation of a roof with integrated photovoltaic system, an accessible pathway at the level of the upper floors of the houses and the completion of the excavation and restoration of the rooms below, eliminating causes of degradation due to the partial excavation of the complex.

Beginning May 28, it will be possible to access daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through a route that, entirely “accessible,” will enrich the barrier-free “Pompeii for All” itinerary. It includes an elevator to reach the suspended walkways.

The route from above will give visitors the opportunity to see the entire insula with an innovative and global vision, and the architecture of Roman houses with the alternation, as in this case, of various rooms used for different purposes, from productive to commercial to thehousing, as well as the ongoing construction activity, with a view to renewed and improved public accessibility, safety, and a “public archaeology” approach.

Entry will be restricted, also in view of the ongoing activities at the archaeological level.

The design of the two lots was supported with funds from the Pompeii Grand Project (2014-2022), while the works received funding from the PON Fesr 2014-2020.
