As a result of the strong heat wave that has been sweeping Campania in recent days, with temperatures even touching 40 degrees, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii recommends anti-hot weather itineraries. In addition to urging the utmost caution and adopting all the useful advice to protect oneself from the sun and the heat, also disseminated by the Ministry of Culture, the Park highlights in particular the presence of some shaded areas, where one can find shelter and at the same time make a visit itinerary against the heat of these days.
Accessing from the entrance in PiazzaAnfiteatro, it is possible to visit theamphitheater a few steps away, for a glimpse of the arena, also lingering in the ambulatories where the exhibition dedicated to Pink Floyd, and their 1971 closed-door concert, is set up.
From there one can look out into the Palestra Grande, which houses in its central portico the exhibition Art and Sensuality in the Houses of Pompeii, and where one can linger in the Palestra’s tree-lined gardens, which will be extraordinarily accessible for this period in order to allow for a cool respite. Also in the shade are the houses in the immediate vicinity: the Praedia of Julia Felix, the house of Octavius Quartius, and the house of Venus in Shell. A little further on, one encounters some houses with roofs such as the house of Menander, the house of the Nave Europa, the Tannery, the house of Ephebus, the Fullonica of Stephanus, and the house of Siricus.
From the entrance instead of Exedra Square, the shaded areas of the pine forest located along the Avenue of the Brooms of access in the direction of the Theater District are noteworthy. But also theAntiquarium, a museum space that displays the most relevant artifacts that tell the story of Pompeii, including casts of victims of the eruption. Near the theater, the striking area of the triangular Forum is almost completely shaded. And along Via dell’abbondanza is thebotanical garden, which will be open to allow cool stops.
Following are additional covered domus in the northeast area of the excavations: house of the Vettii, house of the Dioscuri, house of the Golden Cupids, house of the Silver Wedding, , Villa of Diomedes, Villa of the Mysteries.
However, the Park urges caution when moving from one point to another in the excavations and reiterates its advice for visitors: protect yourself with hats and sunglasses; protect your skin from sunburn with high protective factor sunscreen; avoid visiting the archaeological site during the hottest hours of the day, especially for children and the elderly; carry bottles or flasks of water and drink even in the absence of stimulation. There are several public drinking water fountains inside the excavations (consult the map provided at the entrances); limit consumption of drinks with added sugar, coffee and alcohol. In case of emergency, contact the Park’s Medical Presidium (+39 081 8575404).
