In Pompeii Archaeological Park, the reticular roofing structure of the entire Casti Amanti block was launched in recent days, which will provide a new roof and a pathway with elevated walkways for visiting the insula.
The area includes two prestigious dwellings, the domus of the Casti Amanti, named after the image with the exchange of the languid kiss between two lovers from a triclinium with paintings depicting three banquets, and the house of the Painters at work along with some workshops. The Insula of the Casti Amanti is bordered by Via di Nola and Via dell’Abbondanza and is now undergoing a major restoration, re-roofing and slope reconfiguration work. The intervention will allow the construction of a new integrated roofing system: it will replace an intrusive and disorganized articulated system of pipes, joints and corrugated sheets with a single spatial lattice structure with spherical nodes, seismically isolated. The new roofing system, which will protect the masonry structures together with the precious preserved wall and floor decorative apparatuses, will be complemented by an aerial and completely suspended pathway over the excavations that will offer the possibility of observing the insula from a novel perspective through illuminated walkways also for accessibility to the disabled.
“This intervention, which started with the design from the funding of the Great Pompeii Project, represents one of the most important works of protection, restoration and enhancement being carried out at the Pompeii Archaeological Park,” said director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. “In this case, it will allow thanks to the walkway system an innovative and comprehensive view of the entire Insula, aimed at understanding the architecture of Pompeii’s domus from multiple perspectives.”
