The Museum of the Cathedral Chapter of Perugia celebrates its 100th anniversary on the 500th anniversary of the death of Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino (Città della Pieve, c. 1448 - Fontignano, 1523). In 2023 double celebrations then for the museum venue.
In fact, the museum was inaugurated in 1923, and the works, ordered by art historian Umberto Gnoli (Rome, 1878 - Campello sul Clitunno, 1947), were placed in three rooms made available by the priests of the Cathedral Chapter, that is, the community that has been dedicated to the spiritual and material care of the cathedral and its rich collections of art objects since about the 12th century.
Beginning in 2020, theArchdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve, the Cathedral Chapter, and the GENESI company began a process of enhancing the complex on theIsland of San Lorenzo, which has also resulted in a new layout for the Chapter Museum, which was inaugurated in its 100th year. The rooms are now arranged thematically and no longer chronologically, the selected works tell their own story not only as an artistic artifact, but also as an expression of an authentic message capable of reaching visitors directly.
Through the museum collections it is possible to read some of the historical passages fundamental to the history of the city and the diocese.
The museum’s central room is dedicated to the St. Onofrio Altarpiece, a fundamental work for understanding the artistic journey of Luca Signorelli, who painted for the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. Also from the cathedral come fragments of thePieta altar made by Agostino di Duccio on commission from the Ranieri family, for which a room has been reserved. The works on display here by artists such as Benedetto Bonfigli, Bartolomeo Caporali and Battista di Baldassarre Mattioli tell the story of art, history, faith, traditions, but above all the connection with the territory. Documenting the presence of the papal court in Perugia in the 13th century are the five conclaves that took place within the walls of the Isle of San Lorenzo, evidenced here by the faldistorio, the ephodion that is the liturgical robe that could only be worn by popes, and the Missal of Acre, all preserved in the room dedicated to the popes in Perugia. Each room is able to tell a story related to the works, the artists, the time and the context for which they were generated.
As part of the program of events carried out with the support of the Promoting Committee of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of Perugino’s death and the Perugia Foundation, entitled Perugino in the Sign of Time, the Museo del Capitolo will host a series of exhibitions dedicated to the great Renaissance master. The first planned event, to be held from March 4 to June 11, will be the exhibition and visit to the restoration site of the Altarpiece depicting the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, carried out in collaboration with the National Gallery of Umbria. Visitors will be able to follow, step by step, the restoration of the altarpiece that the Martinelli family commissioned from Perugino in 1505 for their chapel in the church of San Francesco al Prato. A significant didactic-educational opportunity that will allow the public to directly observe the precious and meticulous work carried out by restorers.
