After a taste of November during the days of the XXI Archaeological Tourism Exchange, the museum of the Paestum Archaeological Park has decided to open its deposits every day throughout 2019 to all visitors. From December 23, 2018 and throughout 2019, every afternoon, from 3 to 6 p.m., the museum will in fact be enriched with a new visit route that passes through the deposits and that, in a stable form, becomes part of the Park’s cultural offer. In Italy, this is the first time that the deposits become an integral part, in a lasting way, of the museum’s itinerary.
Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel also emphasizes this: “the project is revolutionary in two respects. First, for the first time the museum’s depots become a stable part of the itinerary, just as they are, that is, without touch-ups and tricks. Those who enter will see the repository in all its natural beauty. In other words: the museum becomes transparent, opening the behind-the-scenes to all visitors. Second, those guiding the visitors are our enjoyment and supervision assistants, that is, those state museum workers often portrayed as bored ’janitors’ who, instead, in Paestum actively participate in the enhancement of the heritage. This makes me proud, because it shows that innovative things can be done in public administration by motivating and involving employees, debunking a whole series of stereotypes.”
“Visiting the repositories, discovering what goes on behind the scenes of a museum, means having the fantastic experience of entering the gears of a complex and fascinating cultural machine, and exploring its many secrets,” says Cinzia Dal Maso, president of the Archeostorie study center, which is participating in the project. “In Paestum this will also mean dialoguing with those who work daily in the museum and therefore understanding what happens there not in the abstract, but from the living voice of the protagonists. I am truly grateful to director Gabriel Zuchtriegel for involving Archeostorie in this important and necessary project: offering the chance to touch the work of cultural heritage professionals means making people appreciate their work more and more, but also the monuments themselves.”
Visits to the repositories will be in Italian, English, German, French and Spanish and will take place every afternoon, except Mondays, at 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. The cost of the ticket is 1 euro, to be added to the Park entrance fee, Paestum Mia annual ticket and Adopt-a-Block card. Children up to 6 years old do not pay. For schools, by reservation, possibility of visiting in the morning as well.
