Paestum, migrants from the reception center contribute to the maintenance of the Archaeological Park

In Paestum renewed agreement between Park and Legambiente to employ immigrants from the local reception center in park maintenance activities.

An agreement has been renewed between the Paestum Archaeological Park and Legambiente, which includes educational workshops on the landscape as well as the involvement of migrants from the Capaccio-Paestum reception center in the protection of the best-preserved Magna-Greek city. On Sunday, July 1, as part of #domenicalmuseo (free admission Sundays for all), there will be a special walk with Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel to celebrate the agreement. The walk will take place on the “Argonauts’ Trail,” the road connects the archaeological site with the sea.

Pasquale Longo, president of Legambiente Paestum, explains why the agreement was made: “The purpose is to allow visitors, including those with disabilities, to enjoy the landscape around the temples. We are able to do this thanks to an agreement between the Paestum Archaeological Park, Legambiente and the Capaccio Paestum Reception Center, which houses asylum seekers who are also periodically engaged in cleaning, weeding and scrub both a section of the ancient walls of Paestum and small areas within the archaeological park.” The connection between immigrants and Paestum is much closer than one might think, explains Director Zuchtriegel: “Around 600 B.C. Greek ships docked here. We don’t know if with the consent or against the will of the indigenous people who lived in the area of the future city of Paestum, and they left us a unique heritage, the temples of Paestum. The Argonauts’ Trail serves to rediscover the link between monuments and landscape, and I am very happy that among those who help us in the maintenance are also the kids from the reception center, who thus get closer to Italian history and archaeology.”

The appointment with the Argonauts’ Trail walk is at the Museum’s ticket office at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 1. The walk will also be open to four-legged friends, thanks to the participation of the “Diamoci una zampa” Association. The easy walk is about 2 kilometers (however, the museum recommends wearing comfortable shoes). There will also be new workshops on Sunday (including one for children with special guides such as Dionysus, Orpheus and the Diver from the famous Tomb of the Diver) and special activities for everyone.
