The Paestum Archaeological Park aspires to be more and more inclusive, and it now does so with an archaeological-themed playground for children: it is the Park of the Little Ones, a space created through a collaboration between the Paestum Park and the Legambiente association of Capaccio Paestum to give young visitors a chance to have fun. The Park of the Little Ones is located on the east side of the “Basilica” and “Neptune” temples, and consists of ten structures that reproduce some of the most famous games of logic and strategy of antiquity (there is also Archimedes’ screw), but also some construction machines used in the construction of Paestum’s three Doric temples. The Paestum Children’s Park, which officially opens on Jan. 27, 2020, is included in the tour route and has explanatory panels and benches where parents can relax while watching their children play and, at the same time, discover interesting elements of ancient history and archaeology.
“The museum as a public institution was born in the 19th century for an audience of educated adults,” says Paestum Archaeological Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. “Today, however, we want to offer a culturally enriching experience for everyone, so we are committed to making the site more accessible for children, but also for people with disabilities. Play involves all the senses and is a tool that should not be underestimated for the transmission of knowledge: it is a stimulus for the creativity of young and old. The past can teach us many things for the future as well, for example regarding environmental sustainability.”
“We strongly relaunch the alliance work for the promotion of local heritage through the care of the territory,” emphasizes the President of Legambiente Capaccio Paestum, Stefano Ciafani. “Legambiente and the Archaeological Park, after the Argonauts and Sirens path and the Landscape Observatory, together again for an experiment aimed at children. A learning and play space to learn about and spread respect for the heritage of cultural, artistic and landscape beauty. We have seen this in the past months: it is through the involvement of the youngest that we are able to spread more awareness about important issues such as environmental protection. This space will be a further challenge of multiplying the places of hope for change.”
