Online is the first digital platform that intends to make the heritage of the world’s most important museums dedicated to the mountains available to everyone: mountainmuseums.org, a project created by the National Mountain Museum “Duca degli Abruzzi” of the Italian Alpine Club - Turin Section, is born.
The initiative is part of the Interreg Alcotra iAlP project that, between 2017 and 2020, has seen the Museomontagna collaborate with the Musée Alpin of Chamonix-MontBlanc to enhance its collections through cataloging and digitization work with a view to expanded usability.
The new platform aims to bring together, based on thematic areas, the materials catalogued and digitized by the two museums, with the future goal of involving other museums and documentation centers dedicated to Alpine culture. A selection of the collections is available on the site: 5,000 pieces of the approximately 30,000 cataloged in the last two years with iAlp.
The content on the platform is divided into three main macro areas: Thematic Galleries, Places, Virtual Exhibitions, to which is added the interactive area that allows you to create your own personal gallery with your favorite objects consulted.
By accessing the Thematic Galleries, you can range from Living the Mountain to Traveling the Alps, from Conquering the Peaks to Observing Nature. Selecting Alpine Portraits also provides a list of the great protagonists in the history of mountaineering-from Horace-Bénédict de Saussure to the Duke of the Abruzzi, from Gaston Rébuffat to Walter Bonatti-and a catalog devoted to each character presents the various documents related to them found in the archives: paintings, photographs, objects, original diaries.
Places such as Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, and Monviso can be explored and the most interesting materials relating to them can be discovered among those preserved in the museums’ collections.
The Virtual Exhibitions section deserves special attention: the exhibitions created over the three years by the two museums are accessible to the public with an extensive multimedia description of the displays and presentation of the exhibits.
For the last exhibition, Here is a Fantastic World. Contemporary Glimpses on theMuseomontagna Archives , an innovative web catalogue is available, with the works created for the exhibition, the assets in the collections that inspired the artists involved in the project, and special textual and video content.
Finally, the Play with Us section offers a series of fun quizzes and drawings for young children to download and color.
Mountainmuseums.org is an evolving project open to the participation of other museums and documentation centers dedicated to mountain culture, especially members ofIMMA - International Mountain Museums Alliance.
