In 2025 Venice will celebrate one of its most illustrious sons with the opening of the Museo Ufficiale Giacomo Casanova at Palazzo Zaguri in the heart of the city. Sponsored by the Giacomo Casanova Foundation, now headed by President Mauro Rigoni, the museum will offer animmersive and interactive experience dedicated to the life and travels of the famous libertine, writer, and traveler.
Why Zaguri Palace? The choice of venue is not accidental: Pietro Zaguri, former owner of the palace, was a friend and patron of Casanova. Historical documents testify to the close relationship between the two, and Casanova stayed several times in this very palace, protected and supported by the influential landlord. The majestic structure, with 5 floors, 35 rooms, and extensive exhibition spaces, will therefore allow the story of Casanova to be told through cutting-edge technologies, augmented and virtual reality, and multimedia tours, in the very palace where he stayed.
The Casanova Museum will then host interactive exhibits, events and temporary exhibitions, and among the planned initiatives are experiential paths to relive Casanova’s life and travels; virtual and augmented reality to explore his world in an innovative way; spaces for research and education, with scholarships and academic collaborations; events dedicated to the figure of Casanova and Venetian culture; book presentations and academic research; and collaborations with contemporary artists.
The museum is intended to be not only a tribute to a famous figure from Venice’s past, but a dynamic and constantly evolving cultural laboratory. A soon-to-be-selected international scientific committee will ensure a rigorous and innovative approach to the narrative of the character
The official opening is scheduled for September 2025.
“Casanova is coming home,” comments President Mauro Rigoni. “This museum will not only be a tribute to the past, but a reference point for the future. Our goal is to tell a true and authentic story, breathing new life into the Casanova myth through a modern and engaging experience. After 2025, Palazzo Zaguri will become the permanent home of the museum, offering added value to Venice’s cultural and tourist offerings.”
