Completed the new lighting in the Prison Gallery of the Accademia Gallery in Florence. In just under a month, the Florentine museum venue has completed the renovation of the lighting systems in this environment that houses Michelangelo’s four unfinished masterpieces. Carried out while maintaining public access and transenneling the affected areas from time to time, the work made it possible to install brand new LED projectors capable of providing ideal light to all the works.
“The new lighting apparatus in the Prison Gallery,” said Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Accademia Gallery, "is part of the major renovation, maintenance, refurbishment, lighting and air conditioning works that have been affecting the entire museum since 2019 and are now almost complete. After the rooms of the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, which were completely renovated and reopened at the beginning of 2022, it was in fact the turn of the Transetto first and then the area that houses Michelangelo’s sculptures. Now, the only thing missing from the roll call is the David Tribune, the heart of the museum, which will soon be visible in all its splendor under a new source of light."
In order to carry out the interventions, Michelangelo’s sculptures and the panel paintings on the walls were secured thanks to specially made wooden structures, which safeguarded the works from accidental falls of material from above, while leaving them entirely visible. The last fundamental phase of the work saw, just in the past few days, the placement of LEDs, paying special attention to the correct vision and reading of each statue.
The new installation aims atenergy saving andefficiency, thanks to the use of the latest LED technology. The project was overseen, as a sponsor, by Enel X and is part of a larger intervention involving other areas of the museum.
