A new monitoring and maintenance system for the Colosseum Archaeological Park developed in collaboration with theItalian Space Agency was presented today. It is the System for the Protection and Education of Archaeological Heritage (SyPEAH) web platform that aims to facilitate effective conservation and monitoring activities through an innovative and technological assessment method.
To carry out the project, the Colosseum Archaeological Park collaborates with various research institutions and universities such as the Polytechnic University of Milan, University of Rome-La Sapienza, spin-offs of the Federico II University of Naples, and professionals, archaeologists, engineers, architects, geologists, and restorers. In addition, since 2019 the Technical Table for Monitoring has been established involving the Italian Space Agency (ASI), INGV and ISPRA.
SyPEAH relies on innovative technologies such as remote sensing, the use of satellite data and drones to ensure better management of the archaeological and natural heritage of the Archaeological Park. Satellite monitoring, through acquisitions planned by the ASI-Ministry of Defense COSMO-SkyMed mission, will enable the preparation of timetables of the interventions necessary to ensure sustainable management of the area.
Using specially developed algorithms, the system is aimed at developing a qualitative and quantitative assessment of site vulnerability. As a result, increasing the resilience of monuments will enable mitigation of the effects of climate change and critical weather phenomena.
SyPEAH uses a Decision Support System (DSS) to manage the information on the platform, an intuitive and user-friendly archaeological heritage management tool that reports to the monitoring laboratory established in the Park, which is equipped with a specially designed and dedicated data processing center by Dr. Irma Della Giovampaola, who is also its manager.
The presentation was attended by Alfonsina Russo, Director General of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, Irma Della Giovampaola, Head of the Office of Monitoring Archaeological Areas and Monuments of the Colosseum Archaeological Park and Head of the Roman Forum, Deodato Tapete, Maria Virelli, two members of the Italian Space Agency, Francesco Fassi and Cristina D’Achille of the Milan Polytechnic, and Simone Scardapane of the University of Rome-La Sapienza.
